ADJ: Syrian Wheat Value Chain Restoration

About This Project

Restoring locally adapted Syrian wheat through an integrated pilot linking certified seed, climate-resilience treatment, and community harvest-recovery for local bakeries.

“Restoring locally adapted Syrian wheat through an integrated pilot that links certified seed, climate-resilience treatment, and a community harvest-recovery system feeding local bakeries.”

Multifaith Alliance

“Restoring Syria's own wheat to Syria's own fields, and turning each harvest into bread for families who need it.”

Wheat Value Chain Restoration

After fifteen years of conflict, Syria's wheat production has been hollowed out: local seed systems collapsed, irrigation infrastructure was damaged, and farmers turned to imported varieties poorly suited to a water-constrained environment.

In North Aleppo, MFA and its technical partner are piloting an integrated recovery model that pairs certified locally adapted seed with a climate-resilience treatment and a community harvest-recovery system, milling recovered wheat locally to supply bakeries serving vulnerable households.

Integrated Model Components

Key Pillars of the Recovery Model:

  • Certified, Locally Adapted Syrian Seed: Native, high-yield varieties specifically adapted to water-scarce conditions and local soil.
  • Comprehensive Cultivation Support: Supplying organic fertilizers, irrigation-fuel vouchers, and rigorous field-level technical agronomy assistance.
  • Community Harvest Recovery System: Milling recovered wheat locally into high-grade flour to supply subsidized community bakeries serving vulnerable households.
