Emergency Tents to Homes Program
More than two million people had been forced to flee to Northeast Syria due to consistent aerial attacks throughout the region over the past few years. Another million have been added to those numbers of displaced in more recent attacks on Idlib.
To respond to this emergency MFA swiftly built tent camps with large insulated two-family tents, which housed 7,000 individuals who were without shelter.
These tent camps were established in secure areas near the Turkish border, and were accessible to large vehicles capable of distributing critical supplies. “We’ve chosen the location to be far from floods and mud,” said an Orient worker at the camp near Al-Hamama. “We‘ve paved the land with gravel and basic services are provided.”
EMERGENCY TENT PROGRAM
The Multifaith Alliance for Syrian Refugees (MFA) is the leading interfaith response to the Syrian refugee crisis. MFA has delivered more than $150 million worth of relief supplies to the region since October 2016.
To respond to the emergency in Idlib, MFA is building an Emergency Tent City to shelter displaced people:
The tents, sourced locally, are approximately 13’ x 19’ include floor cover and are supported by iron beams to withstand winter winds.
- Each tent is divided into two rooms, to house two families.
- The plans include arrangements for water and sanitary facilities and initial basic food rations.
- The cost of the tents and the initial set up is only $300 apiece.
While these tents served to save lives in the immediate, MFA recognizes the need for more substantial housing options for the future.
To address the situation, we have developed a program to source and build more durable, long-term housing communities in a safe zone of northwest Syria. These dependable homes will be equipped with a finished bathroom and water reservoir, and will be situated in housing communities that are close to nearby hospitals, schools, and relief distribution services.
